Located on the slopes of Mount Comero, a short distance from Agriturismo Il Pagliaio and the center of San Piero in Bagno, Long lake and Pontini lake are two gems nestled in an Apennine landscape of rare beauty. Created by a historic landslide in the 18th century, these lakes today offer an oasis of peace, coolness, and biodiversity.
A Paradise for Relaxation and Fishing
The two lakes, despite being close to each other, offer different nuances of naturalistic experience:
- Pontini Lake: This is the largest and best-equipped lake. Surrounded by majestic centuries-old chestnut groves, it is a popular destination for sport fishing (trout, carp, and sturgeon) and for Sunday outings. Its shores are home to picnic areas and accommodations where you can enjoy traditional Tuscan-Romagna dishes.
- Long lake: More secluded and wild, it’s the ideal place for those seeking absolute silence. Its waters reflect the intense green of the surrounding vegetation, creating an almost fairytale atmosphere, perfect for birdwatching or a rejuvenating read away from the hustle and bustle.
Activities and Trails
The lake area is a true hub for lovers of slow movement:
- Cycling and walking paths: A convenient circular path connects the two bodies of water, offering a flat walk suitable for everyone, including children and the elderly.
- Hiking: More challenging trails depart from the lakes and climb to the top of Monte Comero or rejoin the network of the Savio Valley.
- Chestnuts and Flavors: In autumn, the surrounding woods become the home of the harvest of prized chestnuts, making the visit a complete sensory experience.
Why visit them?
While the Labyrinth and Adventure Parks focus on action, the San Piero lakes offer contemplation. It’s the perfect place to cool off on hot summer days (the temperature here is always a few degrees lower than in the valley) and admire the autumn foliage, one of the most spectacular in all of Romagna.
